A study was conducted as part of a concerted action to support reading research among students beginning to learn to read and write in Elementary Cycle One. The aim of the study by Giasson and Saint-Laurent was to determine why some students considered at risk of experiencing difficulties in learning to read still manage to succeed, while others not considered at risk actually experience difficulties. In it the authors attempt to identify the protective factors against reading failure in order to be ableto act as quickly as possible, i.e. in Elementary 1, in order to prevent these difficulties from worsening.
