Application for a teaching licence
Graduates of Québec universities do not need to take any steps with the Ministère. Once a student completes a teacher training program, the university will send the Ministère the documents required to issue a teaching licence.
Individuals currently enrolled in a recognized teacher training program in Québec can submit an application for a provisional general education teaching licence or a provisional vocational training teaching licence.
- Provisional general education teaching licence (renewable under certain conditions): awarded to individuals currently studying in either a bachelor’s or master’s teacher training program in Québec
- Provisional vocational training teaching licence (renewable under certain conditions): awarded to individuals currently studying in a bachelor’s teacher training program in Québec
Individuals with a teaching licence issued in Canada but outside of Québec must hold a teaching licence issued by the competent authority of the Canadian province or territory where their studies were completed or recognized. This licence may be contingent on specific conditions. After the file has been analyzed and if the application has been accepted, and subject to the verification of the applicant’s judicial record, the applicant will receive a teaching diploma or a provisional teaching licence by mail.
- Teaching diploma (permanent licence): may be awarded to holders of a teaching licence without any conditions issued in another Canadian province or territory.
- Probationary teaching permit (renewable under certain conditions): may be awarded to holders of a teaching licence subject to conditions and issued in another Canadian province or territory. These renewal conditions may include the successful completion of a course or a probationary period. Once these conditions have been met, the applicant is issued a teaching diploma.
Individuals with a teaching licence issued outside of Canada must ensure they meet the conditions before starting the process. After the file has been analyzed and if the application has been accepted, the applicant will receive a notice of conditional eligibility by mail along with a document providing information on the compulsory language examination.
The processing time for all types of teaching licence applications is 60 working days. Only complete applications, i.e. those that include all the supporting documents indicated on the respective forms, will be processed. The Ministère will contact the applicant by email when it has completed the analysis of the file.
