The Schools Host an Artist or Writer component allows students to participate, for an extended period of 4 to 12 weeks, in a project involving artistic exploration and offers professional artists or writers the opportunity to spend time in the school environment and to find inspiration there for their own creative pursuits.
Role of partners
Schools Host an Artist or Writer promotes diversity in the cultural activities offered to students throughout their education. Professional artists, writers and cultural organizations are encouraged to share their creativity with students by introducing them to a variety of artistic works and by having them discover occupations related to the arts and culture through an active, hands-on approach.
Students participate in projects that expose them to the creative ideas, means of expression and language of the cultural partners as well as different aspects of the craft.
Recognized artists, writers and cultural organizations can thus help students to develop critical judgment, aesthetic awareness, a better understanding of themselves and others, and greater self-esteem.
These points are also emphasized in the Québec Education Program (QEP), which requires that students play an active role in their learning. Teachers must make the relevant connections between the QEP and the projects supported under the Schools Host an Artist or Writer component of the Culture in the Schools program. The teacher must be an active participant in the project and provide pedagogical expertise. It should be noted that the cultural partner in no way serves as a substitute for the teacher during the project.
