Despite aggressive advertisements targeting young people, association with sporting events and claims that they increase energy levels, energy drinks are not designed for athletes. Energy drinks must not be confused with sports drinks, which are designed to promote rehydration and recovery after a workout. Due to the high content of caffeine, sugar and other ingredients in energy drinks, they may even have adverse effects on athletic performance.
