A teacher from Nunavik, Maggie MacDonnell, is among the ten finalists for a global teacher prize of one million dollars.
Selected from among 20 000 nominees from 179 countries, this teacher has made a remarkable contribution to the lives of the young people and adults in Salluit. She provides her students with artistic, culinary and sports activities that are meaningful to them and encourage them to give the best of themselves, despite their often-difficult daily lives. Ms. MacDonnell helped open a physical fitness centre and co-founded a running club. These actions have increased the number of students who stay in school and improved the lifestyle habits of the Inuit people of this community.
If she wins the top prize, Ms. MacDonnell hopes to found an organization whose programs would focus on the environment and young people in the Nord-du-Québec region.
We congratulate Ms. MacDonnell and wish her the very best of luck at the awards ceremony on March 19 in Dubai.
