Kindergarten for 5-year-olds (available content)

The Ministère has made content for kindergarten available to schools that wish to implement it.

The questions and concerns of children in kindergarten for 5-year-olds with respect to sexuality stem from curiosity about their bodies and anatomical differences, the discovery of the five senses, the growing awareness of their gender identity, and curiosity regarding where babies come from.

The content will enable students to acquire basic knowledge about the parts of the body, including the sexual organs, and to better understand the phenomenon of birth.

A few facts

Sexual growth and body image

Students learn to:

  • identify the parts of the body
  • give examples of what they can express and feel with their bodies

5- to 6-year-olds:

Why are boys and girls made differently?

What is a penis for?

Children who know the parts of their body, including their sexual organs, are more likely to be proud of their bodies and to develop a positive body image.

This also:

  • allows children to satisfy their natural curiosity about their bodies and anatomical differences
  • teaches children the appropriate vocabulary for asking questions about sexuality or to make themselves better understood if they need to report a sexual assault

Pregnancy and Birth

Students learn to:

  • explain the steps involved in making a baby
  • name ways of welcoming a baby into a family

5- to 6-year-olds:

How did the baby get into mommy's tummy?

Why does mommy bleed?

Kindergarten students:

  • are in a stage of development in which they are curious about sexual functions and where babies come from
  • are able to understand concepts related to the phenomenon of pregnancy and birth
