Consultation on School Fees

The aim of this consultation is to arrive at a consensus on school fees so that all Québec students can continue to have access to an active and dynamic public school system. Quebecers are therefore being invited to express their opinions and propose ideas on school fees so that 1) clear guidelines can be provided on the school fees that parents of children attending kindergarten, elementary and secondary school will have to pay for the 2019-2020 school year and 2) a bill on school fees can be tabled as soon as possible.

This questionnaire will give you the opportunity to share your views on the principles that should guide future discussions on the fees associated with attending public school [1], particularly those that relate to:

  • educational services, including educational activities and field trips
  • school supplies
  • other considerations, including childcare services in schools and school transportation

Please note that other fees, not paid by parents but by public schools, are funded through the Québec government’s budget and are not the focus of this consultation.

Your answers to this questionnaire will remain anonymous. Only staff who require this information to carry out their official duties will be given access. In addition, the Ministère will take all necessary measures to maintain the confidentiality of the information collected, in accordance with the Act respecting Access to documents held by public bodies and the Protection of personal information (CQLR, chapter A-2.1).

Your contribution will enable us to reach social consensus on the issue of school fees, in order to provide the school system and parents with clear guidelines for the start of the next school year, and we thank you for this. Your participation, however, is completely voluntary.

The questionnaire will be available online from January 7 to 25, 2019. Please allow 15 to 20 minutes to answer it.

[1] In this questionnaire, the word "school" means public elementary schools (from kindergarten to Elementary 6) and public secondary schools (from Secondary I to Secondary V).
