Subject Areas

All of the programs of study in the Languages subject area share the same goal of promoting the development of competencies in oral communication, comprehension, reading and writing. Adults learn to use communication strategies and knowledge effectively and to broaden and consolidate their repertoire of knowledge and strategies.

The Languages subject area comprises the following programs of study:

The programs of study in the Mathematics, Science and Technology subject area provide unique opportunities to develop rigour, reasoning ability, intuition, creativity and critical thinking skills through systematic observation, questioning, experimentation and the use of the languages of mathematics, science, technology and computers.

The programs of study in the Social Sciences subject area focus on essential knowledge related to citizenship, rights and responsibilities, democratic values and characteristics of a collectivity. They help adult learners construct their identities by giving them access to cultural references that allow them to become conscious of their citizenship. They help adult learners learn to look at their own opinions and values, question them and adopt a critical distance in order to assess them.

• Regional Geography of Québec

The inclusion of the Personal Development subject area in Common Core Basic Education highlights the importance for adult learners of acquire the tools needed to exercise their social roles and develop autonomy and a sense of responsibility in various aspects of physical, psychological, interpersonal and social life.

The subject area of Working Life directly concerns adult learners’ occupational activity and fulfillment. It also promotes their active participation in the community and society at large by familiarizing them with a role that can influence their daily lives.

The Working Life subject area comprises the following programs of study:

• Career choice

The programs of study in the Personal Development subject area enable adult learners to develop values such as commitment, self-affirmation, solidarity, equality and respect, and qualities such as self-confidence, trust, willingness to make an effort, autonomy and a sense of responsibility.

The Personal Development subject area comprises the following programs of study:

• Physical Education and Health
• Preventing Dependency
• Human Sexuality

The programs of study in the Career Development subject area give adult learners opportunities to develop their personal and occupational identity. Through exploration, reflection and experimentation activities, adult learners define their interests, discover their talents and arrive at a better understanding of the role they may play as active members of society.
